Challenge Accepted Portraits
August 11, 2020Have Your Intuitive Portrait Created
August 19, 2020Beautiful abstract paintings are most successful when your composition is considered as the most important part of a painting. You need to be able to draw your viewer into the mystery of the painting slowly and deliberately.
Since our isolation began in March of 2020, I have been playing daily with old demo workshop pieces, overpainting non-objective imagery. This process oriented approach has been so fascinating to view as I go through the intricate process.
Creating good composition is one of the most important things that I teach, and doing this in a Beautiful abstract paintings, formatting it in great compositions is a wonderful adventure in my own work. I start by standing in front of a fully finished flower painting, or landscape, etc., take a large brush and create a bold stroke of a single color right over the entire painting. I then close my eyes and do a free form drawing over the top of all of it. From there it is a juggling of colors, collage, line and form to create a story through the balance of all of these elements.
The series is called Juxtapositions of Life and as I create, ideas run through my mind and the story is set. Of course I would never presume to force a viewer who approaches the canvas to consider my story theirs. Every viewer brings their own life history to a canvas and see something that is very personal to them. I love this approach, the concept and the results. Here is a small video discussing the latest triptych I created amazingly, by accident. Such a delightful surprise.
