INSPIRED BY THE BLUE NOTE YEARS AND JAZZ MUSIC
If you have ever picked up a “Blue Note Years” book in passing or watched the Ken Burns Jazz, A Miniseries, then you probably were hooked on the sensual music of Jazz, the time period and the places the musicians and patrons hung out. The most inspiring music
that I paint with and listen to is Jazz. Easy Listening Jazz to very eclectic Jazz. I am completely inspired by it. When I start one of my Jazz Paintings, I turn on the Jazz music and paint feverishly. The lmusic becomes the painting, I become the music and the Jazz Paintings literally paint themselves. I have been known to finish one of the jazz pieces in the matter of an hour. I believe that I must have been a jazz musician in a previous life, particularly a black male jazz musician! This must be why I am so drawn to create them on canvas. My purpose in creating this collection is not to create a work that resembles a musician, but to create a painting through brush work and color that exudes the energy of Jazz.
paintings being added to the collection are a series of Speakeasy and Cabaret works. The figures are romantically and typically from days gone by. Gay and straight, men and women enjoying the evening and trying desperately to discover one another in these animated story telling paintings. These works will soon be available as limited edition prints, open edition prints and products. I am so excited to step up to the canvas when I begin one of these works, as they can take a turn with every brushstroke. I return to Puerto Vallarta with two new works from this collection.
